Every June 5th we
celebrate the World Environment Day, and it reminds me of a question I heard some
months ago: Where are we in the
universe? and immediately I thought about the fact that the universe has
billions of galaxies and into those
galaxies there are billions of planets, but in the end we just have One
Earth, yes just ONE, so we have to take care of it.
Why do we
celebrate World Environment Day?
First held in 1973, World Environment Day is described
as “a global platform for inspiring positive change” by the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP), the organization that created it. World Environment
Day is celebrated to achieve its main goal that is to encourage people to take
action and protect the environment.
Through the years we have heard people talking about
the issues our planet has, many experts mention that nowadays Earth is facing a
triple planetary emergency, it is important for all the Earht’s inhabitants to
know that the climate is heating up too quickly for people
and nature to adapt, and this is not going to stop unless greenhouse gas
emissions are quickly reduced. On the other hand, habitat loss and other
pressures mean an estimated one million species are threatened with extinction.
Many species have become extinct because of hunting and
overharvesting, the conversion of wetlands and forests to croplands and urban areas, pollution, the introduction of invasive species, and other forms of human-caused destruction of their natural environments. And finally, pollution continues to poison our air,
land and water. Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. It is a global problem. Although urban areas are usually more polluted than the
countryside, pollution can spread to remote places
where no people live.
What can we
do to protect our environment?
First of
all, helping the environment should be a goal that every person must have. Becoming
an environmental fighter or warrior could be very simple and it might be real
if we do simple actions like going to grocery stores with our bags instead of
buying the plastic , reducing, reusing and recycling is a good process we need
to apply in our houses, too.
Here you
have ten simple choices for a healthier environment
Steiner and
its commitment with the environment
Steiner is an environmentalist school that has a great
commitment with the planet and for that reason is always motivating its
community to take action and become the change that the world needs. From
kindergarten to senior students have the opportunity to learn and grow in a
natural environment surrounded by huge tres and school gardens that
provide students a real-time look at how food is grown, they
visit the garden every day to be part of the amazing natural process of plant growing,
students can learn and develop different activities in contact with the nature
where they can learn how to plant, grow, and harvest, a variety of fruits and vegetables.
This school is aware that organic gardens are a wonderful way for students to
physically and emotionally connect with
nutrition education. Understanding the process of growing healthy food, and
recognizing that all of us are responsible of the environment is a goal
that Steiner has always in mind. No matter how old you are or where you live,
the environment needs you and the change starts with you.
